Firefighters Battle Barn Fire In Scorching Temperatures …

By Ex Chief Bill Renzetti
July 18, 2013

At 12:51 p.m. Eastport firefighters were called to a structure fire on River Avenue in Eastport. Upon arrival firefighters found a large barn about 30 feet wide and 80 feet long on fire. Eastport Chief immediately called for additional fire departments to help extinguish the fire.

Center Moriches firefighters were dispatched at 12:58 to stand by at the Eastport firehouse to cover any calls in the Eastport Fire District. During the stand-by CM Firefighters responded to County Road 111 and Sunrise Hwy for a smoke investigation which turned out to be the smoke from the River Avenue fire.

While returning back to the Eastport firehouse, Center Moriches firefighters we directed to the scene of the fire on River Avenue to relieve the firefighters on scene.

Due to the extreme temperature and high humidity, firefighters were routinely rotated on scene to prevent them from getting heat exhaustion. Additional cooling assets were also brought in from Suffolk County Fire Rescue & Emergency Services to assist the firefighters at the fire.

It took 50 firefighters approximately an hour to bring the fire under control. Two firefighters from other agencies were transported to a local hospital with non-life threatening injuries. The cause of the fire is under investigation by Southampton Town Fire Marshal's office.

Center Moriches Firefighters were back in service within 2 hours.
