By Company One Captain Bill Renzetti
October 25, 2017

On Wednesday October 25th Firefighters from the Center Moriches Fire Department spent time at Our Lady Queen of Apostles, Regional Catholic School and the Clayton Huey Elementary School teaching the children of our community the importance of fire safety.

This year’s Fire Prevention Week theme, “Every Second Counts: Plan 2 Ways Out!” works to better educate the public about the importance of developing a home escape plan and practicing it.

Home escape planning is one of the most basic but fundamental elements of home fire safety, and can truly make the difference between life and death in a fire situation.

A home escape plan includes working smoke alarms on every level of the home, in every bedroom, and near all sleeping areas. It also includes two ways out of every room, usually a door and a window, with a clear path to an outside meeting place (like a tree, light pole, or mailbox) that’s a safe distance from the home.

Firefighters encouraged all students to develop a plan together with their family and practice it.

During the assembly, trophies were handed out to the winners of the fire prevention poster contest. Following the presentations students were given tours of the fire apparatus that was on display at the school.

All residents are reminded to frequently discuss fire safety with their children and remember to test your smoke detectors and carbon monoxide alarms once a month and change your batteries when you change your clocks.

The Center Moriches Fire Department would like to extend our sincere thanks to all the students who participated in the fire prevention poster contest, and to all of our Volunteer firefighters who donate their time each year to teach the children.
