At 3:02pm Center Moriches FD Ambulance was requested to assist the Ridge Fire Department who was on the scene of a fiery crash on the Long Island Expressway. Five fire departments as well as 19 EMS agencies responded to the scene after a tractor-trailer heading eastbound on the Long Island Expressway struck a number of cars, triggering a pileup involving 35 vehicles. At least three vehicles, including the tractor-trailer caught fire. The crash started when a tractor trailer hauling debris from Superstorm Sandy slammed into multiple vehicles just after 2:30 p.m., causing a trail of wreckage across the east bound lanes of the expressway close to a half-mile long. The 35-vehicle wreck killed one driver and injured at least 33 people. 2 of the injured had to be Medivaced to Stony Brook Hospital, 11 were taken to Brookhaven and 18 to Peconic Bay Medical Center. Center Moriches Ambulance stood by on scene while the injured were accounted for. The Long Island Expressway was closed eastbound at exit 66 for approximately 15 hours while Suffolk County Police investigated the cause of the crash. Center Moriches Ambulance was back in service about an hour later. |
