Just before 5pm on Tuesday, the Center Moriches Fire Department was dispatched to a motor vehicle accident with injuries on Montauk Highway at Wilcox Avenue under the Long Island Railroad (LIRR) overpass.
Upon arrival, first responders found a tractor-trailer overturned in the roadway. The truck, which had been traveling west on Montauk Highway, struck the LIRR overpass and flipped into the oncoming lane.
As part of a mutual aid response, firefighters from Center Moriches and East Moriches worked together to extricate the unconscious driver from the overturned vehicle. Firefighters also worked to contain a fuel spill and secure the tractor-trailer.
Once extricated, EMS personnel evaluated the driver, who was subsequently airlifted to Stony Brook University Hospital for treatment of his injuries.
Montauk Highway remained closed for several hours while crews worked to upright the truck and clear the roadway. |
